Sign PDF puts your handwritten signature onto a page of a PDF. Draw it with a mouse, trackpad or finger, or upload a picture of a signature you already have, then drag it to the right spot on a preview of the page and set how wide it should be. The signed copy downloads as a new file with -signed added to the name.
Everything runs inside your browser with JavaScript. Neither the PDF nor your signature is uploaded, so there is no transfer to wait for and nothing left on a server afterwards. The signature is embedded in the page content as a PNG image rather than added as a separate annotation, so it shows up the same way in any PDF reader and cannot be switched off or deleted with a click.
This is a picture of a signature, not a cryptographic digital signature. It proves nothing about who signed or when, and anyone with a PDF editor could copy or remove it, so it suits the everyday forms and agreements where a scanned signature would be accepted. Each run places one signature on one page; to sign several pages, run the tool again on the downloaded file. One PDF at a time, up to 100 MB.
How to use Sign PDF
- 1Select the PDF, or drop it onto the page. The first page appears in the preview.
- 2Under Signature, choose Draw it and sign in the box, changing Ink or Thickness if you want, or choose Upload an image and pick a PNG with a transparent background.
- 3If the PDF has more than one page, use Previous and Next to reach the page you want to sign, then drag the signature to where it belongs.
- 4Set Width (% of page) to size the signature, anywhere from 5 to 90. The default is 30.
- 5Click Sign page (the button names the page you are on) and download the signed PDF.
Frequently asked questions
- Is this a legally binding digital signature?
- No. The tool places an image of your signature on the page; it does not create a certified digital signature with a certificate or timestamp. Many everyday forms accept a drawn or scanned signature, but if the other party requires a cryptographically signed PDF, you will need different software.
- Is my document uploaded to sign it?
- No. The PDF and the signature image are read and written by JavaScript running on your own device. Nothing is sent to FreeAIPDF or to anyone else.
- Can I sign more than one page?
- One signature on one page per run. To sign a second page, download the signed file, add it back to the tool, and place the signature again on the next page.
- Why does my uploaded signature show a white box around it?
- JPG images have no transparency, so whatever is behind the signature in the picture, usually white paper, is kept when the tool converts it to PNG. Use a PNG with a transparent background instead, or draw the signature directly in the tool, which produces a transparent PNG.
- Can someone remove the signature later?
- The signature is drawn into the page content rather than added as a separate annotation, so it cannot be deleted with a click in a PDF reader. A PDF editor could still remove or copy it, which is why this is not a substitute for a cryptographic signature.
- Does it work on a phone?
- Yes. You can draw the signature with your finger and drag it into place on the page preview. The drawing canvas is captured at three times the size it appears on screen so the signature stays reasonably sharp when it is scaled onto the page.
