Scan to PDF: Scan to PDF turns a phone camera or a webcam into a document scanner that runs on a web page, with no app to install. Tap Scan with camera, hold the page in view, and each shot becomes a page. The tool looks for the sheet's edges in the live picture and outlines them for you; hold steady for about a second and it captures on its own, or tap the shutter yourself at any time. You can also add JPEG, PNG, WebP or HEIC photos you already have with Add photos. FreeAIPDF runs 100% locally in your web browser using WebAssembly. Your files never leave your device, guaranteeing absolute confidentiality, zero subscriptions, and no file size paywalls.

Every page you add is checked for a rectangular sheet against its background. When one is found, that outline is used to crop the photo and straighten out the camera angle, so a page shot at a tilt or held in portrait comes out flat and upright, not stretched. A cleanup filter then whitens the paper and lifts shadows while keeping color, and you can switch it to grayscale, a high-contrast black and white for the smallest files, or turn it off, for all pages or one at a time. When no sheet is found, the whole photo is kept and flagged so you can crop it yourself.

Nothing leaves your device: the camera feed, every photo, the page detection and the finished PDF are all handled in the browser tab, with no upload and no account. Drag pages into order, edit a page's corners by hand if the automatic outline needs adjusting, choose A4, Letter, Legal, A5 or a page sized to match each scan, and build one PDF, up to 20 pages. Reloading the tab clears anything not yet downloaded.

How to use Scan to PDF

  1. 1Tap Scan with camera and allow camera access when your browser asks. The rear camera opens first; use the switch-camera control to change it.
  2. 2Point the camera at a page. Its edges are outlined as soon as the tool finds them; hold the phone steady for about a second to capture automatically, or tap the shutter to capture right away.
  3. 3Repeat for each page, then tap the page-count thumbnail in the corner to finish. To use photos you already have instead, tap Add photos (or Scan more once you have pages).
  4. 4Tap a page to open its editor if the crop needs adjusting: drag a corner, or use Auto-detect, Whole photo or Rotate. Pick a filter, per page or for all pages under Filter for all pages.
  5. 5Drag pages into order, or use the arrow buttons on a card, and delete any you do not want.
  6. 6Choose a Page size — A4, Letter, Legal, A5, or Match each scan to size the page to the photo — then set an Output file name.
  7. 7Tap Build PDF from N pages, then Download to save the file.

Frequently asked questions

Does it find and crop the page automatically?
Yes. Each photo is checked for a rectangular sheet against its background, and when one is found it is used to crop the photo and straighten the camera angle. It can miss a page that is close in color to what it is resting on, very dim, or only partly inside the frame; when that happens the whole photo is kept and marked so you can crop it yourself in the editor.
Is my camera feed or my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. The live preview, page detection and every photo stay in the browser tab, and the PDF is built there too. Nothing is sent to FreeAIPDF or anyone else, which is also why pages disappear if you reload the tab before downloading.
I took a photo holding my phone upright. Will the page come out sideways?
No. A photo's stored orientation is read and corrected before the page is detected, so a portrait photo produces an upright portrait page, in this tool and in JPG to PDF.
Does it work on an iPhone or an Android phone?
Yes, in any mobile browser that lets a web page use the camera, including Safari on iOS and Chrome on Android. Declining the camera permission still leaves Add photos, which takes JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC and HEIF files; whether a HEIC photo actually opens depends on whether your browser can decode that format, which Safari does.
Will the PDF have selectable or searchable text?
No. Each page is a picture, not text. Run OCR PDF on the result to add a searchable text layer; recognition runs in the browser and currently covers English only.
What does the cleanup filter do to the page?
Auto whitens the paper and lifts shadows while keeping color; Grayscale does the same in shades of grey; Black & white gives crisp black text on a white background at the smallest file size; Original keeps the crop and straightening with no cleanup. Pick one for all pages, or override it for a single page in that page's editor.
